The first time doesn't have to be the worst time!
Understanding what to expect can make the experience less daunting and more manageable. So here’s what you need to know, m’dears.
1. Signs Your First Period is Coming
Before your first period, you might notice changes in your body like breast development, growth of pubic hair, and vaginal discharge. These are all normal signs that your body is gearing up for menstruation!
2. The Timing of Your First Period
The average age for a first period is around 12, but the truth is, it can happen anywhere between ages 9 and 15. Every body is different, so don’t worry one bit if your timing is slightly earlier or later.
3. What It Feels Like
You might experience cramps, bloating, and mood swings. Some girls have mild symptoms, while others might feel more discomfort. A heating pad or doing gentle exercise can help alleviate cramps. Or may we suggest quinoa chocolate?
4. How Long It Lasts
Your first period can last between 2 to 7 days, and your cycle might be irregular for the first few years as your body adjusts. Track your periods to understand your cycle better (they make apps for that, ya know).
5. Managing Your Period
There are various products available to help manage your period, such as pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period underwear. Try different options to find what works best for you.
6. Seeking Support
Don’t hesitate to talk to a trusted adult, whether it’s a parent, teacher, or school nurse. They can provide support and answer any questions you might have.
7. Normalizing the Conversation
Talking openly about periods helps reduce stigma and makes it easier for everyone to share their experiences and support each other! So speak up. And remember, menstruation is a natural and healthy part of growing up.
9. TINA is here to help!
We designed TINA—the tampon insertion aid—to make inserting a tampon foolproof! We’ve created the TINA for Teens kit, that includes an illustrated instruction booklet with information on how to use TINA to insert a tampon for the first time (and some other fun treats) along with a guided meditation-style walkthrough to help you relax and practice with TINA before inserting a tampon.
